Justin Timberlake Does the Dance Music Divas

Justin Timberlake's current "4 Minutes" hit with Madonna is not his first flirtation with an older dance music diva. Justin's been down that path before with Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Nelly Furtado.

"4 Minutes" - Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbland:

Justin's now infamous Superbowl performance with Janet Jackson resulted in a scandal that was, well, worthy of two of the biggest popstars on the planet. At the end of "Rock Your Body", Justin sang "gonna have you naked by the end of this song", reached over and tore the fabric off Jackson's costume, exposing her breast. The resulting media uproar led to Jackson being banned from the Grammy's, a public apology and a fine for CBS Television.

Bad boy Justin also tore it with Kylie Minogue, live on the Brits. As the pair spooned their way through a cover of Blondie's "Rapture", Timberlake reached down and grabbed Minogue's bottom.

Justin and Kylie Live at the Brits:

Timberlake's most recent pre-Madonna collaboration was with Nelly Furtado. Justin and Nelly added their vocals to the track "Give It to Me" from Timbaland's CD "Shock".

Alanis Morissette Returns With "Underneath"

Her last big single was the Seal cover "Crazy". On that track, Alanis Morissette reached out to dance fans with some great club remixes.

Her brand new single is "Underneath" from her forthcoming CD "Flavors of Entanglement". No word yet on whether there will be dance club remixes or who will be the remix artists. But given the success of "Crazy", it is inevitable that "Underneath" will get the dance floor treatment.

Morissette worked with Guys Sigsworth on the new CD. Sigsworth has previously written hits for Seal, Bjork, Robyn, Madonna, Britney Spears, and many others.

Blender Reviews Madonna, Kylie, Mariah and Robyn

We are generally not huge fans of Blender Magazine and their virtual zero coverage of dance music. In this month's issue however, they do redeem themselves somewhat by reviewing the latest CDs from some of our favorite Dance Divas: Madonna "Hard Candy", Kylie Minogue "X", Mariah Carey "E=MC2" and Robyn "Robyn".

The review of Madonna's "Hard Candy" reveals that five songs were produced by Timbaland and four of these, including lead single "4 Minutes", feature Justin Timberlake. Of that track, Blender say: "It's pure grimy escape, a marching band R&B banger about grasping every chance to sweat it out on the dance floor before life passes by". The CD rates 4 stars and other recommended dance downloads are: "Give It 2 Me" and "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You".

Blender is less hot on "Kylie Minogue X" which they rate 2 stars. The reviewer states: "Kylie has never parlayed her string of delicious pop hits into steady album business, and the search for the perfect stand-alone song leaves her tenth album a ragbag of unrelated ideas." Recommended MP3s: "WOW", "Like a Drug", "All I See".

Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" fares better" "[This dance music CD] is Carey's is most fun album, and her best. Not coincidentally, it's also her most propulsive, with strong contributions from A-list producers including Jermaine Dupri, SwizzBeatz, Stargate, Tricky Stewart..." not to mention Timbaland protege Danjahandz. Recommended dance downloads: "Touch My Body", "Migrate", "Last Kiss".

And finally "the CD [that Blender] is totally gay for", "Robyn". This "self titled, self labeled return is heartsick and pissed off, with freezy electro beats and a poison purr light on sex kitten and heavy on avenging angel you can dance to. The hooks come off-kilter and killer..." Recommended music downloads: "With Every Heartbeat","Handle Me", and "Cobrastyle".

Dance Music Remake: Sexual (Li Da Di), Mariah Carey and Timbaland

"Dance Music Remakes" features our "wish list" of tracks that we'd like to see remade or covered by today's hottest artists and most in demand producers. Our first ever pick: "Sexual (Li Da Di)".

"Sexual (Li Da Di)" is the worldwide 1999 club hit by dance music star Amber. The infectious track was penned by Amber (Marie Clare Cremers) with hitmakers Rick Nowels (Dido, Nelly Furtado) and Billy Steinberg (Madonna, Celine Dion).

In our version, the track would be sung by Mariah Carey. Throughout her storied career, Carey has recorded covers to boost the hit count of her CDs. She's covered "Without You", "Open Arms" by Journey, and "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5 and so many others. "Sexual (Li Da Di)" would be the perfect fit for Carey's voice and persona.

And production honors go to...perhaps the hottest producer in the world today, Timbaland. Lately, the man is everywhere. He's produced hits like "Sexyback" for Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous", and his own "The Way I Are". His latest hit is Madonna's U.S. chart comeback single "4 Minutes".

Dance Music News Checkpoint: Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Kelly Clarkson

This week Mariah Carey surpassed Elvis Presley's total HOT 100 #1s by hitting that coveted spot with her latest single "Touch My Body". Mariah now has the second most #1s of any artist in history and is within range of record holders The Beatles. Carey's latest dance music CD bows this month and, if the stellar "cast" that she worked with are any indication, expect more #1s to follow.

Meanwhile, blogger Perez Hilton posted a brief except from Madonna's latest dance music video for her single "4 Minutes". The video features Justin Timberlake. Check is out here.

New and unfinished Kelly Clarkson tracks surfaced this week on Los Angeles blog "Pretty Much Amazing". The tracks are titled "Close Your Eyes," "Ready," "One Day," and "With a Little Bit of Luck". According to Clarkson: "The fact that people have heard music that's not ready yet sucks, but I hope they like it." Listen here.

Kelly Clarkson's most recent dance chart hit was the Dave Aude Remix of "Never Again":

Dance Music Roots: Madonna's "Hung Up"

1n 1979, around the time when Madonna was a young adult hanging out at dance clubs, Donna Summer and ABBA ruled the charts. Small wonder then that the dance music icon should cite these two artists as among her early influences.

Two decades later, Madonna recorded and released her throwback to late Seventies disco, "Confessions on a Dance Floor". The roots of the lead single "Hung Up" was unmistakeably Summer's "Hot Stuff" and ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme".

On "Hot Stuff", Summer sang:

Sittin' here, eatin' my heart out waitin'
waitin' for some lover to call
dialed about a thousand numbers lately
almost rang the phone off the wall

Lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
gotta have some hot stuff
gotta have some lovin' tonight
I need hot stuff
I want some hot stuff
I need hot stuff

Madonna echoed that sentiment in "Hung Up":

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Meanwhile, Madonna borrowed not only the sentiment of the lyric but also the riff of "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)" (another song about waiting for a lover) after appealing directly to ABBA founder Bjorn Ulvaeus. Here are the original tracks and Madonna's "Hung Up":
