Justin Timberlake Does the Dance Music Divas

Justin Timberlake's current "4 Minutes" hit with Madonna is not his first flirtation with an older dance music diva. Justin's been down that path before with Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Nelly Furtado.

"4 Minutes" - Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbland:

Justin's now infamous Superbowl performance with Janet Jackson resulted in a scandal that was, well, worthy of two of the biggest popstars on the planet. At the end of "Rock Your Body", Justin sang "gonna have you naked by the end of this song", reached over and tore the fabric off Jackson's costume, exposing her breast. The resulting media uproar led to Jackson being banned from the Grammy's, a public apology and a fine for CBS Television.

Bad boy Justin also tore it with Kylie Minogue, live on the Brits. As the pair spooned their way through a cover of Blondie's "Rapture", Timberlake reached down and grabbed Minogue's bottom.

Justin and Kylie Live at the Brits:

Timberlake's most recent pre-Madonna collaboration was with Nelly Furtado. Justin and Nelly added their vocals to the track "Give It to Me" from Timbaland's CD "Shock".

From the "OMG" File: Dance Diva Wannabe "Dale Bozzio"

We almost feel bad writing this but it's just so AWFUL we can't resist. Former Playboy bunny Dale Bozzio first had success in the early Eighties with her band "Missing Persons".

"Missing Persons'" CD Spring Session M spawned the radio and MTV hits "Words, "Windows", "Destination Unknown", and "Walking in LA" (later covered by Traci Lords). The band released a couple of other CDs, one in 1984 and the other in 1986, and then broke up.

"Words"

Things went quiet for Bozzio until 2000 when she resurfaced on the CD "Vigin Voices: A Tribute to Madonna". Her cover of the classic dance music hit is so bad, it has to be heard (here) to be believed.

Bozzio next surfaced on the American TV Show "Hit Me Baby One More Time". Looking shell shocked and sounding weak of voice, she performed her hit "Words" and a cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" to mostly disastrous reviews.

Dale released a new solo CD in 2007 titled "New Wave Sessions" with covers and remixes of Eighties New Wave hits. In March, 2008, she released a Live "Missing Persons" CD that is essentially a greatest hits set.

Blender Reviews Madonna, Kylie, Mariah and Robyn

We are generally not huge fans of Blender Magazine and their virtual zero coverage of dance music. In this month's issue however, they do redeem themselves somewhat by reviewing the latest CDs from some of our favorite Dance Divas: Madonna "Hard Candy", Kylie Minogue "X", Mariah Carey "E=MC2" and Robyn "Robyn".

The review of Madonna's "Hard Candy" reveals that five songs were produced by Timbaland and four of these, including lead single "4 Minutes", feature Justin Timberlake. Of that track, Blender say: "It's pure grimy escape, a marching band R&B banger about grasping every chance to sweat it out on the dance floor before life passes by". The CD rates 4 stars and other recommended dance downloads are: "Give It 2 Me" and "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You".

Blender is less hot on "Kylie Minogue X" which they rate 2 stars. The reviewer states: "Kylie has never parlayed her string of delicious pop hits into steady album business, and the search for the perfect stand-alone song leaves her tenth album a ragbag of unrelated ideas." Recommended MP3s: "WOW", "Like a Drug", "All I See".

Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" fares better" "[This dance music CD] is Carey's is most fun album, and her best. Not coincidentally, it's also her most propulsive, with strong contributions from A-list producers including Jermaine Dupri, SwizzBeatz, Stargate, Tricky Stewart..." not to mention Timbaland protege Danjahandz. Recommended dance downloads: "Touch My Body", "Migrate", "Last Kiss".

And finally "the CD [that Blender] is totally gay for", "Robyn". This "self titled, self labeled return is heartsick and pissed off, with freezy electro beats and a poison purr light on sex kitten and heavy on avenging angel you can dance to. The hooks come off-kilter and killer..." Recommended music downloads: "With Every Heartbeat","Handle Me", and "Cobrastyle".

Kylie Minogue Works "X" in the United States

Dance music Icon Kylie Minogue has been hitting the talk show circuit in the United States to promote her new U.S. Single "All I See" from her latest CD "X". She's appeared or scheduled appearances on on "Dancing With the Stars", "The Late, Late Show", "The Ellen DeGeners Show" and "The Today Show".

Kylie, who is a superstar in the rest of the world, has so far had only sporadic success Stateside. To date, her biggest U.S. mainstream hits are "The Locomotion" and "Can't Get You Out of My Head".

The artist has high hopes that her new CD will put her back into the spotlight in America. But she admits: "It's a notoriously difficult market. To know where I fit within that market is very difficult."
