The latest single from the re-released Rihanna CD "Good Girls Gone Bad" is "Disturbia". A rythmic dance track in the vein of "Don't Stop the Music", "Disturbia"is already a top ten hit in Canada and scaling the charts Stateside and in the rest of the world.

The track was written by Andre Merritt, Chris Brown, and Robert Allen. It was produced by Brian Kennedy with backing vocals by Chris Brown.

"Disturbia" is the third single released from "Good Girls Gone Bad: Reloaded". The first two were "Take a Bow" and the Maroon 5 duet "If I Never See Your Face Again".

#1 on Billboard: Cyndi Lauper "Same Ol' Fucking Story"

This year will be remembered as the year when two old Eighties rivals, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, had a showdown. So far in 2008, both have scored #1 hits on the Billboard Dance Club/Play Chart. Madonna hit first with "4 Minutes" and Lauper has the current #1 with "Same Ol' Fucking Story".

"Story" was written by Lauper with New York DJ Richard More. Though it's not her first dance chart hit, the CD from which the track is taken is Lauper's first top to bottom dance album titled "Bring Ya to the Brink".

Released within a month of Madonna's "Hard Candy", "Brink" is set to give the current dance music Queen a run for the charts. "Same Ol' Fucking Story" is the second international single from "Brink".

The first single was the Japanese release "Set Your Heart". The CD is packed back to front with single worthy tracks like "Into the Nightlife".

"Sex and the City" Soundtrack: The Version You Won't Find in Stores!

Now that the "Sex and the City" movie is a bonafide hit, the soundtrack is climbing the charts. Upon listening to it several times, however, we were disappointed by the downtempo, folksy ditties that make up the majority of the CD.

Where, we wondered, are the classic and contemporary dance music tracks that the show was famous for? Rather than ponder the issue, we put together our own collection of song inspired by Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

"Strut" by Sheen Easton, "Into the Nightlife" by Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue's latest single "The One", and Amber's "Above the Clouds" from the TV Series are just a few of the tracks that we think fit the spirit of the show and movie perfectly. Have a listen:

Cyndi Lauper "Bring Ya to the Brink"

Cyndi Lauper's latest CD is the dance inflected "Bring Ya to the Brink". Lead single "Same Old Fucking Story" is #5 on the Billboard Dance Club/Play Chart.

On this new CD, Lauper re-opens the competition with Madonna that started some 25 years ago. "Bring Ya to the Brink" is a head on Dance CD that gives Madonna's "Hard Candy" a run for the money.

"Same Old Fucking Story" is already a dance smash and the CD is packed with other potential singles. "Into the Nightlife" and "Echo" are instant Lauper classics.

Lauper is not the first pop artist to go the "top to bottom dance" route. Gloria Estefan did it in the late Nineties with her CD "Gloria". But no one since Cher's "Believe" has jumped genres so effectively and convincingly as Lauper has on "Bring Ya to the Brink". This one's a keeper and it's songs will become the soundtrack of summer 2008.

Justin Timberlake Does the Dance Music Divas

Justin Timberlake's current "4 Minutes" hit with Madonna is not his first flirtation with an older dance music diva. Justin's been down that path before with Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Nelly Furtado.

"4 Minutes" - Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbland:

Justin's now infamous Superbowl performance with Janet Jackson resulted in a scandal that was, well, worthy of two of the biggest popstars on the planet. At the end of "Rock Your Body", Justin sang "gonna have you naked by the end of this song", reached over and tore the fabric off Jackson's costume, exposing her breast. The resulting media uproar led to Jackson being banned from the Grammy's, a public apology and a fine for CBS Television.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake Live Superbowl Performance:

Bad boy Justin also tore it with Kylie Minogue, live on the Brits. As the pair spooned their way through a cover of Blondie's "Rapture", Timberlake reached down and grabbed Minogue's bottom.

Justin and Kylie Live at the Brits:

Timberlake's most recent pre-Madonna collaboration was with Nelly Furtado. Justin and Nelly added their vocals to the track "Give It to Me" from Timbaland's CD "Shock".

Billboard Dance Music Single Reviews: Mariah Carey "Bye Bye"

One "Touch" was enough to convince the masses that at 38, Mariah Carey is as much a chart tigress as anyone half her age. Sure enough, "E=MC2" launch single "Touch My Body" became her 18th No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single. That playful romp is followed by a reminder that Mimi is as capable of putting a weighty message in front without sacrificing melodic juice. "Bye Bye" offers comfort for anyone suffering loss: "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody, your best friend, your baby, your man or your lady/Lift your head to the sky, cos we will never say bye." A tinkly piano-driven groove escorts the lyrical embrace, with oozy synths, a flush of R&B via male shout-outs of "Eh!" and a vocal that builds to a fitting tour-de-force crescendo, though pushed down in the mix to maintain decorum. "Bye" seems poised to have Carey greet the top of the pops for a 19th time. —Chuck Taylor

"Bye Bye" is the second single released from "E=MC2". Carey has promoted the single with live performances on "American Idol", "Good Morning America", and "The Oprah Winfrey Show". No official dance music remixes have yet surfaced and it is not clear whether any will be released. Carey's last single "Touch My Body" hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard Dance Club/Play Chart.

That CD, the dance music artist's second, was originally released in the U.K. and Europe in 2007 under the title "N.B.". "N.B." spawned three singles in the U.K. but was ultimately revamped for U.S release with the new tracks "Love Like This" and "Pocketful of Sunshine".

Bedingfield has been spendng time in the U.S. lately promoting the CD. She recently did a live performance on the top rated "American Idol" tv show.

Madonna Conquers the World - Again!

On the heals of her latest #1 CD "Hard Candy", Madonna announced this week that she will tour the world. The "Sticky & Sweet" Tour kicks off August 23 in Wales, with dates throughout Europe over the summer. The tour comes to North America in October and will include dates in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Toronto.

The dance music icon also announced that the followup single to "4 Minutes" will be "Give It To Me". "Give It to Me", which was written by Madonna and Pharrel Williams (of "Neptunes" fame), has already emerged as a top Madonna download on iTunes. In Fact, on the strength of it's iTunes popularity, the song debuted at #21 on the Hot Digital Sales chart. Madonna recently performed 'Give It to Me" live in New York City at the Roseland Ballroom:

The success of "Hard Candy" puts Madonna in second place, ahead of Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, for the most #1 CDs by a female artist. That record is currently held by Barbra Streisand, who has eight to Madonna's seven. "Like a Virgin", "True Blue", "Like a Prayer", "Music", "American Life", and "Confessions on a Dance Floor" are the other six #1 CDs by Madonna.

Billboard Reviews Celine Dion "Alone"

This is "Taking Chances"? With an adventurous, even daring array of triumphant tracks on Celine Dion's new album, Sony couldn't play it safer than second single choice of a cover of Heart's "Alone." Dion's performance is ever-exceptional—she delivers formidable drama sans bombast—but radio hardly needs a new version of a consummate song that still plays well as catalog (46 AC outlets recently gave it spins). More important, how does this show the singer has spread her wings stylistically—the calling card of the project? Dion's most dedicated followers were polled on celinedionforum.com and 20% agreed that "Fade Away" casts the ideal mix of reinvention and commercial appeal; they're right. "Alone" came in ninth. If those most invested in Dion's success believe the choice off-base, then what's the potential to kindle "Alone" beyond the disappointing No. 6 peak of previous single "Taking Chances"? —Chuck Taylor

Leona Lewis Tops U.S. Album Chart With "Spirit"

Leona Lewis made dance music history on Wednesday by becoming the first U.K. solo female artist to top the American album chart. Her latest success comes just weeks after scoring the #1 hit Stateside with "Bleeding Love".

Few music industry insiders are surprised by the success of Lewis' CD "Sprirt". Her mentor is American Idol's Simon Cowell and she is signed to industry legend Clive Davis' J. Records. Davis previously guided Whitney Houston to chart domination and international stardom.

"Spirit" was the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK and sold more than two million copies within weeks. Her single "Bleeding Love" has been at hit in 10 countries and was the biggest-selling single of 2007 in the UK, staying at the top spot for seven weeks and selling more than one million copies.

Janet Jackson Wants Her Some "Luv"

"LUV(MP3)" is the latest single from dance music artist Janet Jackson's CD Discipline(MP3). It follows "Feedback" and "Rock With U" as the third American single.

Reviews for "Luv" have been mixed at best. One reviewer called the Darkchild produced track "an instant club banger". A UK reviewer was less kind stating that the song "finds the veteran songstress spouting cringe-worthy chat up lines over trashy re-hashed '90s beats".

"Luv":

No commercially released remixes of "Luv" have been announced. The original version of the song peaked at #34 on the U.S. R&B chart. The label is reportedly prepping "Can't B Good(MP3)" as a fourth single for June release.

From the "OMG" File: Dance Diva Wannabe "Dale Bozzio"

We almost feel bad writing this but it's just so AWFUL we can't resist. Former Playboy bunny Dale Bozzio first had success in the early Eighties with her band "Missing Persons".

"Missing Persons'" CD Spring Session M spawned the radio and MTV hits "Words, "Windows", "Destination Unknown", and "Walking in LA" (later covered by Traci Lords). The band released a couple of other CDs, one in 1984 and the other in 1986, and then broke up.

"Words"

Things went quiet for Bozzio until 2000 when she resurfaced on the CD "Vigin Voices: A Tribute to Madonna". Her cover of the classic dance music hit is so bad, it has to be heard (here) to be believed.

Bozzio next surfaced on the American TV Show "Hit Me Baby One More Time". Looking shell shocked and sounding weak of voice, she performed her hit "Words" and a cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" to mostly disastrous reviews.

Dale released a new solo CD in 2007 titled "New Wave Sessions" with covers and remixes of Eighties New Wave hits. In March, 2008, she released a Live "Missing Persons" CD that is essentially a greatest hits set.

Timbaland Assists Ashlee Simpson on "Bittersweet World".

On her upcoming CD Bittersweet World(MP3), due on April 22, Ashlee Simpson worked with dance music hitmaker Timbaland to add some groove to her pop/rock CD. Timbaland worked his magic on three cuts: "Murder," the Pat Benatar-like fist-pumper "Rule Breaker" and the manic "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)."

So far the set has spawned two singles. "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" was released in late 2007 and Little Miss Obsessive dropped in March.

"Outta My Head" (Remix):

"La La"(Sharp Remix):

Bittersweet World(MP3) is Simpson's third CD. Her debut CD "Autobiography" was a triple platinum seller in 2004. Her 2005 CD "I Am Me" was certified platinum.

Mariah Carey Hits Big With "E=MC2"

Mariah Carey's new dance music CD "E=MC2" hit store shelves this week and sold an astounding 154,000 copies it's first day of release. These numbers would be impressive in any climate but they are doubly so in the depressed CD market of 2008.

The lead single "Touch My Body" has already hit #1 on the mainstream U.S. Chart. The remixes (Touch My Body (Remixes) MP3)meanwhile are ascending the Billboard club chart.

At least three more singles are planned for E=MC²(MP3), "I Stay in Love", "I'm That Chick" and "Bye Bye". Carey performed "Bye Bye", a song she wrote for her late Father, during a well publicized appearance this week on American Idol.

Dance Music Classic CD: Donna Summer "Bad Girls"

In spring 1979, it was so easy to tag Donna Summer: her upcoming album "Bad Girls" (CDMP3) was bound to be sexy, pulsating, naughty, beat driven hot - everything you'd want from a dance music record. But, as with every other truism, the real life details do this artist a little more justice.

With five essential albums released in just the two years following her 1975 breathrough, Summer was the biggest star ever launched from the club underground. Her first worldwide hit "Love to Love You Baby" sparked countless fantasies and the precedent-shattering mid-1977 release "I Feel Love" was applauded universally as a tecnological and musical breakthrough.

The following year, two crucial pop songs rocketed Donna Summer directly into the mainstream. "Last Dance," written for Summer's supporting role in the film Thank God It's Friday, hit the Top 5 in late Spring. The magnificent elaboration of Jimmy Web's cantata "MacArthur Park" followed, being Summer's first Number One single in the Fall, driving Live and More, Summer's first Number One album. And, by then, her trademark wasn't a wispy coo, but a voice of knockout power, gem-like clarity, and laser-like pitch.

In fact, after this three year run, this artist was just about to score her biggest hits yet. And Summer was doing plenty of the heavy lifting herself, right alongside her celebrated producers and writing partners, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. The busiest cowriter on Bad Girls is Donna herself, with five co-writes and three songs solely written by her.

The entirety of Bad Girls sets a standard of consistency that has rarely been matched since, and it's diversity underscores Summer's undeniable influence on every young div-ette who followed, whether from R&B, pop, country or dance. "Dim All the Lights" and "On My Honor" both have country elements that foreshadow Summer's later settling in Nashville. And just as much as "Journey to the Center of Your Heart" and "All Through the Night" feel like the singles that the label never got to, Bad Girls' electronic medley - "Our Love", "Lucky" and "Sunset People" - could have easily have anchored a second album itself.

It was apparent, the week of Bad Girls release that it was one of the great dance music CDs of all time - a perfect play. And in retrospect, it is definitive in it's production style, it's vision of a truly global dance music, and it's kaleidoscopic expression of a woman's outspoken, daring, emotional and observant sides. What was the savviest, most apt reflection of 1979 continues to be an essential expression of the present time, and the forseeable future.

Dance Music Comeback Diva: Robyn

Swedish pop singer Robyn was last heard from in the United States in the Nineties. Back then, she scored two big dance music hits: "Do You Know (What It Takes)" and "Show Me Love".

In the later part of 2007, early 2008, she resurfaced in a big way with a new cd titled Robyn. The lead single "With Every Heartbeat" went to #1 in Britain and garnered the artist some press interest Stateside.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT: Kim Wilde "Loved"

Kim Wilde made quite a splash when her debut single "Kids in America" hit in 1981. The track went top ten in the UK, Europe and Australia and peaked at #25 in America.

Although she continued to chart in many international territories, she wouldn't have another hit in America until 1987. The Supremes' cover "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was an international smash that took Wilde to the coveted #1 spot in the United States. She was the last U.K. solo female artist to acheive that benchmark until Leona Lewis released "Bleeding Love" in 2008.

In 2001, Kim recorded a new track called Lovedthat was written by the "Kids in America" songwriters for a compilation CD. Although the song garned some club play in the U.S. it failed to break through and become a bonfide hit.

Dance Music Classic: Shannon "Let the Music Play"

"Let the Music Play" by Shannon became a Top Ten hit in the United States at the same time as "Holiday" by Madonna. The two tracks made music history by redefining the dance music sound for the 1980s.

The original version of "Let the Music Play" peaked at #8 on the mainstream Hot 100. It went all the way to #1, however, on the Billboard Dance Club/Play Chart.

The single was most prominently covered in 1996 by U.K. artist Mary Kiani. Kiani took the track to #19 on Britain's singles chart.

In 2000, Shannon re-recorded the track for her "Best is Yet to Come" CD. She released remixes that year by Junior Vasquez and Plasmic Honey on a collection called "The Lost Remixes", which also included DJ mixes of "Give Me Tonight".
